Bled Island and its bell tower on Lake Bled, with the Karavanke behind
Ljubljana, the Julian Alps, the Karst and the coast

Everything in Slovenia is a day trip.

Bled or Bohinj. Postojna or Škocjan. The Soča at rafting speed or a wine walk under Ljubljana castle. Two hours by road reaches any of it — the hard part is choosing which version of each day to book.

The first decision

Out of Ljubljana, most people get one big day.

Four in ten tours on this site leave from the capital, and nearly all of them go to one of three places. Here is what each day actually gives you.

The lake day

Bled, the island bell and the castle rock

6–10h· from $45· coach or small group

A pletna boat out to the island, ninety-nine steps up to the bell, then the castle terrace for the view everyone came for. Longer versions add Bohinj and the Savica waterfall.

The underground day

Postojna’s cave train, then Predjama

7–9h· from $60· tickets usually included

A railway runs into the mountain, and the cave stays at ten degrees whatever July is doing outside. Most trips pair it with the castle wedged in the cliff twenty minutes away.

The river day

The Soča, from the Bovec side

Half day· from $50· April to October

The water really is that colour. Rafting and kayaking run on snowmelt, so the season is roughly April to October — and the good outfits are all based up in Bovec, not in the city.

Start with the obvious

The six days Slovenia is known for.

The lake, the caves, the castles, the gorges, the Adriatic old town and the national park. Almost every itinerary is built from these, and each one has a best way to book it.

The capital

Ljubljana is small enough to eat your way across.

Two hundred thousand people, a river with seven bridges over it, and a castle you can reach by funicular in a minute. The food tours here are genuinely good — Slovenian cooking sits between Alpine, Balkan and Italian, and nobody explains that better than someone walking you through the central market.

Soča Valley

Bovec is where Slovenia gets wet and steep.

The valley behind Bovec holds the country’s canyoning, its rafting and its longest zipline park, all fed by the same snowmelt river. Book from Bovec rather than the city and you spend the morning in the water instead of on a coach.

All Bovec trips
The Karst

Two Slovenian caves, and they are not the same trip.

Postojna is the one with the train, the concert hall and the baby dragons; Škocjan is a river canyon roofed in rock, walked on a bridge a hundred metres above the water. Predjama, the castle built into a cliff mouth, is twenty minutes from the first and usually sold with it — but it is its own visit, and worth treating as one.

Only here

Three things only Slovenia can sell you.

Alpine lakes and old towns exist all over this corner of Europe. A castle inside a cliff, the stud farm that named a breed and a river canyon with a roof on it do not.

Built into the rock

Predjama Castle

A Renaissance front wall closing off a cave mouth halfway up a 123-metre cliff, with the castle’s rooms running back into the hill behind it. The passages above it were the reason a fifteenth-century siege here failed for over a year. Most tickets pair it with Postojna Cave, nine kilometres away.

Since 1580

The Lipica Stud Farm

Every Lipizzaner in the world traces back to the pastures on this Karst plateau, founded in 1580 and still breeding. The foals are born dark and turn white over several years. Visits run around the stables, the carriage museum and the training hall, and combine easily with Piran on the same road down to the sea.

A canyon with a roof

Škocjan Caves

The Reka river disappears underground here and carves one of the largest known underground canyons in the world. The walk crosses it on a footbridge with the water a hundred metres below and no artificial lighting to soften the scale. It is UNESCO-listed and photography is not allowed inside.

Coast and border

Slovenia’s coastline is 47 kilometres long. It still has a Venice.

Piran juts out on a spit with a campanile copied from St Mark’s and streets too narrow for cars; Koper, the working port up the road, is where the cruise ships tie up and where most tours actually start. From the same corner you can be in Trieste in forty minutes and Zagreb in two hours.

The usual loop

How a first week in Slovenia normally runs.

When it rains

Slovenian weather turns fast. Go underground.

The Julian Alps make their own afternoons, and a wet one closes the gorges and cancels the river. The caves do not care: Postojna and Škocjan hold about ten degrees all year, the castles have roofs, and a wine tasting or a cooking class is a better use of a grey afternoon than a lake you cannot see across.
