Bovec is where Slovenia gets wet and steep.
The valley behind Bovec holds the country’s canyoning, its rafting and its longest zipline park, all fed by the same snowmelt river. Book from Bovec rather than the city and you spend the morning in the water instead of on a coach.
Two Slovenian caves, and they are not the same trip.
Postojna is the one with the train, the concert hall and the baby dragons; Škocjan is a river canyon roofed in rock, walked on a bridge a hundred metres above the water. Predjama, the castle built into a cliff mouth, is twenty minutes from the first and usually sold with it — but it is its own visit, and worth treating as one.

A Renaissance front wall closing off a cave mouth halfway up a 123-metre cliff, with the castle’s rooms running back into the hill behind it. The passages above it were the reason a fifteenth-century siege here failed for over a year. Most tickets pair it with Postojna Cave, nine kilometres away.

The Lipica Stud Farm
Every Lipizzaner in the world traces back to the pastures on this Karst plateau, founded in 1580 and still breeding. The foals are born dark and turn white over several years. Visits run around the stables, the carriage museum and the training hall, and combine easily with Piran on the same road down to the sea.

Škocjan Caves
The Reka river disappears underground here and carves one of the largest known underground canyons in the world. The walk crosses it on a footbridge with the water a hundred metres below and no artificial lighting to soften the scale. It is UNESCO-listed and photography is not allowed inside.

Slovenian weather turns fast. Go underground.
The Julian Alps make their own afternoons, and a wet one closes the gorges and cancels the river. The caves do not care: Postojna and Škocjan hold about ten degrees all year, the castles have roofs, and a wine tasting or a cooking class is a better use of a grey afternoon than a lake you cannot see across.
